Immersive History in Virtual Reality
2020
Nowadays, remote education tools are becoming a necessity. VR technology offers us the safest traveling form to real and imaginative spaces.

Learning
Human beings throughout time have used visual-based methods to help them remember and store information — from early cave drawings to modern-day media. Personally immersing yourself in what you’re studying helps motivate you to fully understand it, as it requires less cognitive effort to process the information.
A Penn State University study found that students who used immersive virtual reality to accomplish a task did so more than twice as fast as students who used traditional computer programs.

What is Out There
CLASS VR
A new concept in educational technology: a “standalone” Virtual Reality headset complete with a student-friendly interface, gesture controls, embedded educational resources and simple-to-use teacher controls.

LIFELIQE
STEM education begins long before the days of higher-education lab work. To that end, Lifeliqe’s hundreds of common core-aligned lesson models span chemistry, biology, physics and other science curricula for K-12 learners, all available in interactive 3D or augmented reality.

LABSTER
Virtual lab environment which allow students to culture bacteria, track cellular respiration during an exercise routine, even conduct an ultrasound exam on an expectant mother — virtually speaking, of course. More than 250 institutions currently use the technology.

Design Principles
EASY TO USE
Eliminate the need to have special skills
to interact with a VR app.

MEANINGFUL
You can’t create a good VR learning experience without a good story. That’s why it’s so important to advance the art of storytelling.
ADAPTABLE
VR experiences should allow students to explore at their own pace. The app should provide complete control over the level of difficulty.
Users
1. Teacher
The teacher uploads content to the platform and shares timeline with students. |
2. Student
The homeschooling student receives an email invite to a shared timeline. He/she downloads a platform to a personal VR headset and starts exploring curriculum. |
About the Content
Based on activity and timing, the timeline content is divided into three immersive experience evolution categories:
The immersion technique is much older than technology. It is the key to storytelling, in literature, film, even in the spoken stories told by our ancestors around the campfire. Rituals and religion practices of Ancient Civilizations, through visual stories and optic illusion, gave rise to immersive experiences.
The Western European fascination with ancient Middle East magical traditions, coupled with growing demand for entertainment, opened a new historical page for immersive experience. Magic tricks that combine story, technique and imagination are among the first immersive experiences to be documented.
Truly immersive experiences are meant to fully capture and engage individuals in the VR creator’s conceptualized world. Significant advances in science and technology—along with the efforts of pioneering 20th century inventors and artists—have helped pave the way for low-cost, high-quality immersive devices. Numerous companies today are developing new and evolving immersive tools and services.
Assimilating Content
Content is accessible via short messages and info box format. The latter is used to increase one’s interaction time with content. The user can access info box messages by clicking the event date, with which the user associates visual information. The info box is then presented in full-screen mode, displaying date, description and visual. The repetition of visual features increases delayed imaginative drawing that user creates to remember the content.
Future Updates
• Virtual platform for user-generated timelines
• Info boxes with video content
• Google 360 images integration to locate history events
• Extension to full-source learning materials
• Virtual chat room for real-time VR classes
• Collecting mechanism for feedback, impressions and comments
• “How to Navigate” illustrations

Other User Cases
The virtual timeline format can be combined with various learning materials. For example, museums can display the timeline in conjunction with exhibition details.
The other way to repurpose the main feature could be a Virtual Reality File/Archive Browser. Using the timeline principal, to create digital VR file browsing system for online cloud service. User can enter into selected folder and navigate through various files.

"The current obsession with immersive experiences will continue—we love our illusions and the stories that go with them. To be swept away out of the present by an immersive story is a timeless human need, one that dates back as far as we do."
